The Copperhead Fire Tower was the first fire lookout tower built in Ohio erected in 1924.

The lookout tower was once manned by park rangers who watched over the vast landscape of the forest observing campfires and lightning strikes and looking for outbreaks of wild fires so that crews could be dispatched to contain the blazes to help minimize the damage done to the forest.

Fire lookout towers are no longer used to detect wildfires in Ohio so most of them have been taken down over the years.

The fire tower can also be accessed by auto using Shawnee State Forest Road 6.

There is a parking area provided just past the fire tower.

The tower, which is one of only 20 still standing of the orginial 40 that were built, was renovated and restored in 2011 by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Visitors who are able to do so are encouraged to climb the 60ft fire tower and enjoy the breathtaking view.
